Design Features At the corner of La Brea Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard, the $75 million, West Hollywood Gateway sits at one of the busiest intersections in the region. It combines an eclectic collection of low-rise buildings, architecturally elaborated exteriors and generous setbacks of 10 to 16 feet to enable strolling and dining along wide sidewalks. Public artwork with video projections, LCD’s and web-based technology creates a kinetic light painting on a 50-foot-tall projection screen. Lush landscaping, fountains and a central plaza contribute to the urban village atmosphere.
Obstacles/Solutions The project fulfills the City of West Hollywood’s intent to beautify a historic, but blighted stretch of Santa Monica Boulevard. The project incorporates the historic Formosa Cafe and also provides space for big-box tenants sought by residents.
Benefits Recognized as one of the finest urban in-fill retail developments, the complex was designed by The Jerde Partnership. It was named “Best New Commercial Project” from the California Redevelopment Association for its success at enhancing the quality of life for residents and making the area more attractive to investors.
