Design Features A $70 million, open-air retail and entertainment center at Highway 111 and Bob Hope Drive, The River sits at the geographic center of the Coachella Valley. The park-like waterfront project is a virtual oasis in the desert with fountains, a man-made lake, streams and cascading waterfalls, plus, elaborate landscaping and scenic walkways and an entertainment amphitheater.
Obstacles/Solutions The J.H. Snyder Company worked closely with the City of Rancho Mirage and teamed with project architect, The Jerde Partnership, a pioneer in “placemaking” to create a signature development in Southern California’s desert region, and a unique gathering place for the community. The River further enhances Rancho Mirage’s profile as a leader in luxury developments.
Benefits A case study in the art of “placemaking,” The River is the only outdoor lifestyle center in the Coachella Valley and draws shoppers and visitors from the desert cities and beyond. It has received national recognition for its design and creation of place and has generated further commercial development along Highway 111.
